Secularism as Religion

Secularism is a faith-based belief system. One might fairly argue that Secularism is a religion. Secularism enshrines a dual-faced god of State and Self.

The State dictates morality and ethical behavior built upon the ever shifting sands of public opinion, party doctrine and dogma, or a cult of personality.

The Self seeks a paradise of material wealth and consumption which is available right now (not after death) or promised to be available (often by the State) in the near future.

Tithes are paid in the form of taxes. Extra tithes may be paid in the form of scratch tickets. Perhaps the Secular god will smile upon you for your offering.

Priests are called "Ministers" or in the United States they are referred to as "Secretaries". Their underlings hear the pleadings of the faithful and the wicked.

As long as the Self gets its necessities, the State is a deity worthy of worship. Additional luxury goods for the Self will bring converts from around the world. This State is THE State.

Self asks much of State; health, wealth, wisdom, security, defense, justice, grace, sympathy, order, leadership, comfort, understanding, and much, much more. The more Self asks of State the more powerful State becomes in order to answer Self's "prayers".

State offers what it will or what it can. Either too much extravagance or too little basic care and State falls apart when Self realizes State is a false god.
